Day 12: An iconic cartoon was inspired by a black woman

28 Days of Black History

 

Betty Boop was inspired by Harlem jazz singer, Ester Jones. She was known for childlike “boop” scat vocals and nicknamed “Baby Ester.”

Cartoonist Max Fleischer created a character known for revealing clothing, curves, and singing “Boop Oop A Doop.”
